Sarbox Costs 'Unpredictable,' Still Rising

Some public companies are considering going private.

> > Compliance costs continue to be especially painful for smaller companies. The 85 companies with annual revenue under $1 billion (out of 115 total respondents to a recent survey) reported that their average cost of being public climbed from $1.24 million before the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley to $2.13 million in 2002 and $2.86 million in 2003. All told, the average cost for these companies increased $1.6 million, or 130 percent, since Sarbox was enacted.
